This week the Wall Street Journal published an article asking professionals to consider leaving their laptops at home and working from their smart phones instead. The article noted that many smart phones have become powerful tools that can handle almost any business transaction remotely while not taking up as much space as a laptop.

Using a smart phone to access a virtual law practice online is a great way to increase an attorney’s productivity and efficiency, not to mention the ease of leaving the laptop case at home and putting your law practice in your back pocket.

Because VLOTech is a software as a service, hosted product, attorneys may handle all of their law office functions through their online virtual law office. VLOTech VLOs may be used in iPhones and BlackBerries. VLO activity alerts may be set up to alert the attorney when a new client has registered requesting legal services or if a current client has taken any activity on his or her account. The file and law libraries in the VLO software are all accessible online through the VLO as well as the other law practice management tools.

A VLO makes the practice of law easy to handle when traveling or choosing to work outside of the office. Because a VLO is secure, if the smart phone is lost or stolen, the VLO would not be accessible without the attorney’s username and login information. If you use an iPhone, BlackBerry or other smart phone as a legal professional and would like more information about creating a virtual law office, please contact us at launch@vlotech.com.

New features to the VLOTech software are developed at an average of one update every other week based on client requests and plans for development of the software. Recently, we added a feature that allows the VLOTech attorneys to receive notice of activity on their virtual law offices on their iphone, BlackBerry or other mobile device.

There are three options that the attorneys may select: 1) No Alerts, 2) Email alerts for new cases, or 3) Email alerts for new cases and case updates. The notice sent to their mobile device will provide a link that takes them directly to the case with the new activity after they log into the secure VLO. In addition to this new feature, several additions have been made to the case management tools section of the VLO from the attorney’s backend law office.

Features currently in development for the near future include a linkable and searchable legal research library, creating online forms within the VLO for use in client data intake and export functionality for accounting software, such as QuickBooks.
